This year, I joined a reading club at my school called Red Maple. It’s where you read books written by Canadian authors and you get to meet them at a voting convention if you read five Red Maple books!! Red Maple is for grades 7 and 8’s and Red Maple books are our reading level (they are pretty thick)! One of the Red Maple books this year is The Rule of Three! It’s a new book that I read and it is really good! Because of some events that young kids might not fully comprehend, I would recommend you ask your parents before reading it!

This book is written by a famous Canadian author, Eric Walters. It came out January 2014 so it is a pretty new book! The books subject? What if one day all modern technology stopped working? It doesn’t talk about a simple power outage- but a stop to cell phones, municipal utilities, and only old vehicles without computers or a radio works!! It explains how the world starts struggling to provide for their family with the few resources they have! The worst part is, the situation causes people to do bad things! What they must be thinking (a true guess) ~ Desperate times calls for desperate measures!!

This book surrounds a 16-year-old boy named Adam Daley! Adam is a smart boy, and he is kind. Also, lucky for him, he drives an old car, so he is able to drive around when the power stops. His mom is a cop and his 70-year-old retired neighbor (Herb), is a paper pusher (or so he says)!! He really secretly worked for the government as some sort of spy!!!

This book is called the rule of three, because of all those rules in groups of three. I’m not talking about; rock, paper, scissors or lights, camera, action. These are the rules of three:

  • 3 minutes without air,
  • 3 days without water, and
  • 3 weeks without food!

All these rules will soon start to take place in this book since, water can no longer be purified, fires start causing thick smoke pollution, and food starts to rot without places to keep them in the world!!

This book is tremendously educational, because of its realistic events, and it mixes in some comedy and powerful scenes!! (Spoiler reserved). The book is actually chilling and scary when you think that this could happen to us!

I loved this book a LOT, and I see no needs of improvement for it is well thought out! Every event that takes place has a special part to the book and it will have you do a new facial expression after every chapter! In fact, I was glad to hear that there is a sequel coming out January 2015 called The Rule Of Three ‘Fight for Power’! I can’t waittt!!

I learned that, no matter how good someone is, they can change easily when new events start happening! For example, someone may be friendly once you are playing soccer with them, but when it comes to the final game and you’re there competing, they could easily turn on you!!

This book has taught me so much, it was fun and joyful reading it and I feel that I should share my felt joy with my fellow watotos!! Therefore I encourage you to give it a short. You can trust me, you won’t be disappointed going through its chapters. With that I can easily rate this book a 4 ½ star!!
