In memory of Vanessa Yasintha Wambura (August 2003 – August 2023).

Today I would like to introduce to you my town, Aurora.

Aurora is a comfortable town in York Region in GTA located just north of Richmond Hill. Aurora is a beautiful place, filled with homes, attractions, busy streets and friendly people. It has many cultures such as African, Canadian, Asian, Indian and many more. There are so many different cool festivals and events going on all around Aurora like Jazz Festival, the Rib Fests, and also the Canadian Parade is a real hit. A great thing about Aurora is that everything is a short walking distance away; the streets are live and festive.

Aurora has about 13 schools with 3 public school boards: YRDSB (the English Public Board), YCDSB (The English Catholic Board) and the French Language Boards. My siblings and I attend Lester B. Public School. It is worth to know that our French Immersion school is named after the first Canadian Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson, as Aurora was his childhood home. The population in Aurora is about 56,203 citizens.

Aurora also has a big public Library. I love going to the Aurora Public Library. It is in the heart of Aurora and is a great place to relax or do work. The librarians here are nice and funny. They’re super smart and are willing to help anyone. They are very resourceful. The books here are like a castle full of books. There are thousands of books and DVDs to get. There are so many different genres for book lovers.

Aurora Cultural Centre is another attraction in the town that not only displays the Aurorian culture but also cultures from different towns, cities or countries. In the matter of fact, I happened to win a draw for writing about My Town, Aurora at the Aurora Cultural Center which is located right next to the Aurora Public Library. I was entered in the Draw along with many other children and I won the prize.

There are so many kids to play with, very safe streets. Some big beautiful churches like Our Lady of Grace. There are shopping center and some restaurants. I have lived in aurora since I was two years old, so Aurora is ever my hometown. I couldn’t think of a better place to live.

Despite Aurora being that great and attractive as I mentioned above, there are still a few changes that could be made. I really started to think about them, when I was watching the news one day. I saw a young man who had won an award for his ideas to change Toronto. I was instantly inspired to try to think up some ideas to upgrade Aurora. First, there are lots of houses being built here. Many of the workers spend a few hours a day working on these projects so it takes longer to finish the houses. They should find a way to work long hrs and finish the project within less time to reduce inconveniences such as too many big trucks polluting the air during working hrs.

The property tax in Aurora is one of the highest in Ontario, and increases almost every year which makes it an expensive town to own a house. But since it is a nice town and majority of us still want to live here, there should be a better way to compensate its residents to what they pay. A few I would suggest is for the town to build its own town hospital so that to make convenience for residents to get medical treatments ‘in their own back yard’ instead of commuting to Southlake, Newmarket which is the nearest town.

In addition, I am pretty much sure that the residents of Aurora would loooove to have a mall in their own town. Malls are great places to shop, window shop, or just hang around with friends and families. Therefore, with its population, Aurorians deserve to have ‘all you can buy’ shopping mall with a food court of course.

Overall, Aurora is a great town that I would recommend everyone to come, visit and live.

Asante!
