In memory of Vanessa Yasintha Wambura (August 2003 – August 2023).
What better way to enjoy a Snow Day than to write a review for a perfect book in the warmth of my home knowing that I do not have to go to school and that I am free like a bird all day. I have read many books in my lifetime. How about you? I enjoyed almost every single book I read and have re-read some of them many times. However, one of the book I re-read quite recently stand out. Anne of Green Gables is a very popular book, suitable for all ages. I have read two of these nine book series and I can honestly say that I have fallen in love with this book which is about a red-head and her amazing adventures, in which I am about to explain to you.
Anne of Green Gables was written by Lucy M. Montgomery around 105 years ago, June 1908 to be exact. L.M. Montgomery wrote twenty novels in her lifetime, as well as hundreds of short stories and poems. It took L.M several years to compose this precious piece (and several papers).
Anne of Green Gables tells the tale of the young red-headed Anne, her family and her best friend, Diana. Anne is an imaginative 11 year old girl who learns from her many mistakes in life and grows up to a proper 16 year old young lady.
This book has been read by hundreds all over the world. It contains strong characters, valuable lessons, appropriate language, educational value, hearty comedy, and is suitable for all ages. ALERT: A sad death may hit some kids hard, but the book’s messages about the importance of love, friendship, family, and ambition are worth it.
Siblings Marilla and Matthew (two completely different characters) decide to adopt a young boy to help manage their farm. Once Matthew drives to the train station to pick up the boy, he is surprised to find that it is a girl that was mistakenly brought from the asylum instead of a young boy. Matthew loves the girl, her imagination and knack of talking spontaneously and decides to bring the young girl home. Who is this young girl?
It is none other than Anne with an e who would rather have the name Cordelia (‘it’s such a perfectly elegant name’) and is one of the funniest, most intelligent girl that you will ever meet. Anne has a huge imagination, she disapproves of anything that leaves ‘no scope for imagination’ and has colorful outbursts (‘my life is a perfect graveyard of buried hopes’).Once Marilla decides to keep Anne instead of sending her back like she originally planned, Anne is quick to win over everyone’s heart. From getting her friend drunk, to dyeing her hair green, Anne must learn from her mistakes, and hopefully become a perfect little woman. Anne’s imagination and adventures make me laugh out loud. While reading this book, I felt like I was at Green Gables with this wonderful girl. The book tells of Anne’s first five and a half years at Green Gables and it is guaranteed to make you smile, cry and laugh!
I love this book a lot, however, I would change the death of a strong character in this book. I don’t like this part at all because no one likes losing a loved one, no matter what. I was quite surprised that this character dies and cried my heart out. The funny thing is, I always cry at sad parts once they are fiction. To me, once you cry at a sad part, the author did a good job at making you feel a part of the story.
I learned that, you learn from mistakes, and Anne knows that better than anyone. I learned that you must learn to forgive, because it is really important to maintain a good relationship with someone. God would not want us to not forgive someone that asks for forgiveness, once Anne does not forgive Gilbert (Anne’s classmate) for his fault, it would be like God not forgiving us for our mistakes, mistakes that are bigger than the one in the book.
I learned not to be self-conscious about the way you look or about yourself in general. Anne did not like the fact that she had red hair and she did not like her freckles either. She should be proud to be unique or even have a loving family. This book is very good and for those of you who would not like to read it, I strongly suggest you at least watch the movie. It is quite long but very good and entertaining. I rate this book 5 star!
I hope you read it, and I hope you’ve enjoyed your Snow Day!
