Today I am going to teach you about Harriet Tubman. I read a book about her and learned many things.
Harriet Tubman was born a slave. She was never taught to read and write and she could not run around and play. She only worked. She was a hard worker. Some times she did not listen to her owner. If Harriet did not listen to her owner she would get whipped.
Slaves were sold to different owners. Sometimes family’s were broken up because of that. When Harriet saw two of her sisters get sold to a different owner she was scared that she would have to leave her family too.
When Harriet was young she tried helping a slave escape. The owner saw it and threw a medal puck at her. She almost died. After that accident Harriet kept on having headaches.
Harriet Tubman escaped slavery through the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. The Underground Railroad was not a real railroad. The Underground Railroad had different stations. The stations were the home of an abolitionist. An abolitionist was someone who was against slavery.
Harriet went to an abolitionist home. The abolitionist gave her food and then directed her to the next stop. The people there directed her to the next stop. After that, Harriet walked 160 km alone during night and day. After all that walking she finally arrived in Pennsylvania where slavery was illegal. Some slaves escaped to Canada because slavery was illegal as well.
Harriet Tubman made many trips back to the south (where slavery was legal) to lead other slaves to freedom. Harriet led about three hundred slaves through the Underground Railroad. The civil war began between the north and the south. North won and slavery became illegal in America.
Harriet Tubman will always be remembered, because she helped many slaves to freedom. I learned about her on book website called Raz kids. My teacher signed my class up for the website. Your parents could sign you up for it or your parents could ask your teacher to sign your class up. To do this, go to www.raz-kids.com.
