During the past few years and still to come, schools across Ontario have been transitioning into changing to a strict dress code or uniforms. As a student, I am bummed about this. I (and many other students) believe that students should have freedom of expression. You have probably heard this speech many times. But have you ever stopped to weigh the pros and cons? A few teachers, parents, and some students see a bright side to this situation, while most students and some parents are dreading uniforms. I’ll tell you both perspectives.

As soon as you walk through the home door you immediately dread showing your parents the note about getting uniforms. You are tempted to hide the note from your parents, but your strict teacher wants it back the next day. As you show your parents, you can tell they`re happy even if they try not to show it. You can try to argue with them not to sign the note, but man; sometimes parents are more stubborn than two-year olds. They believe it will be easier and quicker in the morning so you may have time to do other things. Also, there is one less thing to be bullied about. People will look at you for your talent not clothing. You just need to buy a few uniforms a year instead of a whole back to school closet every year. Some people believe kids look professional and can focus on work better while wearing uniforms. Lastly schools can be recognized by their uniforms. Do you agree? Are these good enough reasons for you to actually want uniforms? Or are you still in doubt?

You’re taking a math quiz in your itchy uniform, you can`t concentrate and time is running out. The timer rings and you are still only halfway done your test. Worth 30% of your math grade!! A week ago you would have been fine. But your principal announced you would start wearing uniforms next week, the day of the big math test. You are so mad, you studied hard. One of reasons students hate uniforms are how uncomfortable they can get. They can even be distracting. Also you should be able to express yourself and culture with clothes. We all know uniforms are very expensive. You even have to pay for parts you will never use. Next, every few days or so, you need to follow specific rules. How to wash it, dry it, and iron it. More work for parents. Lastly why bother switch to uniforms if it isn`t required in Canada. Do you think we should decide what we should wear? Or will our parents and teachers take over?

I know what I want. I hope this is enough pros and cons for you to know what you want. It is all up to you. Uniforms or no uniforms?! Eventually almost every student will get a uniform. I hope you decide what’s right for you.
